Concrete Pool Construction Process
Concrete pool construction and installation does take a bit longer than fiberglass pool or even vinyl pool installation, but for the ultimate backyard resort experience, it’s worth the wait.
Step 1: Design and Planning
The first step in the concrete pool installation process is design and planning. This stage involves meeting with our swimming pool contractors to discuss your needs and preferences. You'll work with the pool contractor to determine the size, shape, and features of your pool.
Step 2: Permits and Excavation
Once the design is finalized, and the pool builder selected, the pool contractor will obtain the necessary permits from your local building department. We build in some counties where we can have a permit in as little as two days - but the timeframe is varied greatly by county and township. Once the permits are in place, the contractor will excavate the area where the pool will be installed.
Step 3: Constructing the Framework
Unlike other types of pools, concrete pools are completely custom and need to be built on-site. After preparing the area with excavation and backfilling, steel bars that are tied together to create a frame for the shell are installed. This provides a strong foundation for the concrete and gives it a bit of flexibility that helps it move with the ground and other elements in years to come, preventing potential cracks. Plumbing and electrical also gets installed.
Step 4: Building the Concrete Pool
Concrete is then poured or sprayed into the steel frame, and then shaped for a smooth, even finish. The longest part of the process, curing concrete and waterproofing takes around 30 days - weather permitting. This is necessary to ensure the strength and durability of the finished product.
Step 5: Deck and Landscaping
After the pool and plumbing are installed, a concrete contractor will begin work on the pool deck. With Parrot Bay you have options of choosing your own concrete contractor or we offer stone hardscaping and travertine in house. This stage typically takes 2-4 weeks. You will need to hire a landscaper to finish your grading and add your landscaping, grass, and fencing.
Step 6: Plastering
Once cured and tile is installed to prevent staining at the water line, a plaster is applied as the final, finishing layer of the pool itself. A few days after this, water can usually be added and the pool will be ready for use.
